The goldsmith’s craft
Goldsmithing is a traditional craft devoted to making and repairing jewellery in gold, silver and platinum. Handwork remains at its heart, from preparing and shaping the metal to setting stones and final polishing. Every piece calls for an individual approach and knowledge of precious metals and gemstones.
Jewellery and precious pieces
Jewellery has accompanied people since ancient times. Beyond adornment, it has symbolised status, power, belonging and personal stories. A particularly precious piece brings together rare materials, gemstones or pearls and demanding goldsmithing techniques.
Ring
A ring can be a personal ornament or a symbol of a promise or belonging. Legends also surround its origins: one Greek myth links it to Prometheus and the memory of his former binding to a rock.
Earrings
Earrings are among the oldest forms of adornment. Across cultures, women and men have worn them; their shapes, materials and meanings have changed over the centuries.
Wedding rings
A circle without a beginning or end symbolises eternity. Today, a wedding ring expresses a mutual promise and a shared life. Its form has evolved from simple bands to richly decorated pieces, reflecting both the tastes of the time and the wearer’s personality.
Gold
Pure gold is naturally yellow and relatively soft. Jewellery is therefore made with alloys containing other metals, which influence hardness and colour. This is how yellow, white and rose gold are created.
Gold fineness
Fineness is the proportion of gold by weight in an alloy. It is expressed in thousandths or carats: 585/1000, for example, means 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals.
| Gold fineness | Carats | Gold content |
|---|---|---|
| 585/1000 | 14 kt | 58.5% |
| 750/1000 | 18 kt | 75% |
| 999/1000 | 24 kt | 99.9% |
Hallmarks
A hallmark confirms the verified fineness of a precious metal. It is not the same as a fineness number such as 585 or 750 alone. Statutory exemptions apply to hallmarking requirements; consult the Czech Assay Office for valid marks and detailed information.
